MBMS network architecture
- radio network: upgrading software for RNC and Node B.
- core network: upgrading software for SGSN and GGSN and adding new BM-SC network elements under multicast mode.
- terminal: MBMS can be supported immediately after terminal software upgrade.
Introduction of MBMS technology
Frame format
MBMS technology adopts TD-SCDMA frame format and timeslot format. MBMS service alone occupies one or multiple timeslots.
Wireless channel
- logical channel: MCCH and MTCH transfer MBMS's control information and data information respectively
- transport channel: FACH provides data transfer service between tiers.
- physical channel: S-CCPCH

MBMS-based multi-purpose applications can be achieved, such as:
- mobile TV and radio
- multimedia magazines (including pictures, mass music and sports report)
- I am online (voting and real-time comment)
- regional information broadcast (store promotions or tourism destinations info, etc)
- real-time traffic information broadcast
